Last month, Allen Special Olympics Delegation (ASOD) was extremely productive and busy with events: hosting their annual fundraiser and six days later loading up buses, with athletes and chaperones, for the 2023 Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) Winter Games in Lakeway and Bee Cave, TX.
On February 11th, ASOD hosted its 24th Annual ‘Special Angels Among Us’ benefit auction at the Courtyard by Marriott (Allen), its primary fundraiser, that raised more than $85k for its athletes. Sponsorship support from local businesses enable year-round sports training, athletic competition and social opportunities to more than 230 athletes, ages eight through adulthood, in Allen, Fairview, and the surrounding areas. Attendees included officials and employees with the City of Allen, Allen ISD, Allen Police Department, local businesses, as well as residents, athletes, and their families. There were plenty of interactive games and activities before the excitement began during the live auction; however, the real fun began when the auction area was cleared and the athletes took to the dance floor. A great evening was definitely had by all!
Fast forward to Friday, February 17th, when ASOD athletes and chaperones were on their way to Lakeway and Bee Cave for the 2023 SOTX Winter Games, where athletes competed in: cycling, floorball, FUNdamental sports, powerlifting, unified, and volleyball. As athletes, chaperones, and family members gathered at the designated meet-up location, all were greeted by officers with Allen PD who were on hand chatting, passing out stickers, and providing our athletes with plenty of laughs and photo ops. Allen PD did not disappoint, going above and beyond, providing athletes with rock-star treatment. A rousing escort sendoff, with all the bells and whistles of at least half a dozen patrol vehicles out of city limits, kicked off the weekend. As a parent and chaperone of an athlete, to say this was impressive would be an understatement!
